Honey Yield Calculator

Enter frames or supers of capped honey to estimate yield in pounds and jars.

Typical yield per deep frame: 6–7 lbs. Medium: 3.5–4.5 lbs. Shallow: 2–3 lbs. These assume well-capped frames. Honey weighs about 12 lbs per gallon.

Estimating Your Honey Harvest

Honey yield varies by frame size, how full the frames are, and how well-capped the honey is. A full deep frame typically holds 6–7 pounds of honey.

To estimate your harvest: count full frames, multiply by the per-frame yield, and adjust for average fullness. Leave enough honey for the bees — at least 60–80 lbs for overwintering in northern climates.

Honey yield depends on: colony strength, forage availability, weather, and number of supers managed. A strong colony in a good nectar flow area can produce 60–100 lbs of surplus honey per season; average US yield is approximately 30–40 lbs per colony. Weak colonies in poor forage areas may produce nothing extractable.

Yield estimation from frames: a fully capped deep Langstroth frame holds approximately 5–6 lbs of honey. A medium (Illinois) frame holds approximately 3–4 lbs. To estimate total yield: count capped frames × weight per frame. A super with 9 fully capped medium frames contains approximately 27–36 lbs of honey before extraction.

Extraction efficiency: uncapping and spinning recovers approximately 90% of honey in capped cells. Wax cappings retain 3–5% of honey; residual honey in combs (uncapped cells, cell walls) is another 2–3% loss. Factor this into expected yield when planning extractions.

Sugar content and moisture: honey below 18.6% moisture content is safe from fermentation (the Water Activity threshold for Zygosaccharomyces rouxii, the primary honey spoilage yeast). Honey above 19% moisture may ferment in storage. A refractometer ($15–40) measures moisture accurately and is essential before sealing stored honey. Only extract capped cells — bees cap when moisture is below 18%.
